Inclinations and black hole masses of Seyfert 1 galaxies

چکیده
A tight correlation of black hole mass (MBH) and central velocity dispersion (σ) has been found recently for both active and quiescent galaxies. By applying this correlation, we develop a simple method to derive the inclination angles for a sample of 11 Seyfert 1 galaxies that have both measured central velocity dispersions and black hole masses estimated by reverberation mapping. These angles, with a mean value of 36 that agrees well with the result obtained by fitting the iron Kα lines of Seyfert 1s observed with ASCA, provide further support to the orientation-dependent unification scheme of AGN. A positive correlation of the inclinations with observed FWHMs of Hβ line and a possible anti-correlation with the nuclear radio-loudness have been found. We conclude that more accurate knowledge on inclinations and broad line region dynamics is needed to improve the black hole mass determination of AGN with the reverberation mapping technique. Accretion Rates and Inclinations of AGNs
We assume that the gravitational instability of standard thin accretion disks leads to the Broad Line Regions (BLRs), the B band luminosity comes from standard thin disk and the motion of BLRs is virial. The central black hole masses, the accretion rates and the disk inclinations to the line of sight for 17 Seyfert 1 galaxies and 17 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars have been calculated. Our results a...
متن کاملOn black hole masses, radio-loudness and bulge luminosities of Seyfert galaxies
We estimated black hole masses for 9 Seyfert 1 and 13 Seyfert 2 galaxies in the Palomar and CfA bright Seyfert samples using the tight correlation between black hole mass and bulge velocity dispersion. Combining other 13 Seyfert 1s and 2 Seyfert 2s in these samples but with black hole masses measured recently by reverberation mapping and stellar/gas dynamics, we studied the correlations of blac...
متن کاملBlack hole masses from power density spectra: determinations and consequences
We show that the X-ray power density spectra do not simply scale linearly with the mass of the black hole over many decades. Nevertheless, the high frequency tail of the power density spectrum can be successfully used for determination of the black hole mass in an AGN if another AGN is used as a reference. We determine the masses of the black holes in 6 Broad Line Seyfert 1 galaxies, 5 Narrow L...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Black Hole Mass and Velocity Dispersion in Seyfert 1 Galaxies
Black hole masses in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are difficult to measure using conventional dynamical methods, but can be determined using the technique of reverberation mapping. However, it is important to verify that the results of these different methods are equivalent. This can be done indirectly, using scaling relations between the black hole and the host galaxy spheroid. For this purpos...
متن کاملDwarf Seyfert 1 Nuclei and the Low-mass End of the Mbh −σ Relation
To examine the relationship between black hole mass and host galaxy velocity dispersion for low black hole masses, we have measured the velocity dispersions of 15 Seyfert 1 galaxies from the catalog of Greene & Ho (2004). These Seyferts were selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to have estimated black hole masses below 106 M⊙. The data are consistent with a straightforward downward extrap...
